Can you put a value on your services?

Everyone has a reason for starting their business, something inside us drives us to take on the Small Business journey.

We LOVE exploring this deeper with clients when we are helping them establish their brand. We have spoken with so many wonderful people who have great stories on how or why they started. We’ve also met some people who have just discovered a talent and want to monetise it. Which is AWESOME.

Something we have found in common with a lot of small business owners is the inability to value their service/product. It’s time we stop the fear of putting a price on our talents. If you value yourself, your service and/or products, so will everyone else!
Forbes.com asks you these four questions to help establish your purpose:

  1. What makes you come alive?
  2. What are your innate strengths?
  3. Where do you add the greatest value?
  4. How will you measure your life?

These are great, but honestly, it DOESN’T have to get that deep!!! Maybe once you are established you can start asking yourself these really intense questions, but in reality, the reasons for starting your business might be really plain and simple. Money. Family Balance. Something to do on the weekend. Eight years into my business journey and I am still discovering my “Why”… why? Because it changes ALL THE TIME. My why IS always based on my core values and that is to support others. However, the day to day reason changes as often as the Tasmanian weather. That doesn’t mean those reasons are insignificant, they still need to be taken into account when you are branding. You want your business to be representative of the product or service you are selling. You need it to appeal to the clientele you are hoping to attract. Your image, prices, even the way you talk about your business all need to be consistent with the impression you want to give. So our four questions we like to ask are;

  1. Why did you start your business?
  2. What type of client/customer would you ideally like to work with (and then we remind you that not everyone is your customer and finding your niche is very important)?
  3. What is the feeling you want others to have when they connect with your brand?
  4. Is your business representative of you as a person, or would you like it to have its own identity?
